Balcony Solar: Belgium’s Plug-and-Play Rules, Read Properly

Belgium legalised the simplest solar product there is — plug it in, register it, done. A year in, balcony solar is the volume story nobody in the industry saw coming, and the rules are simpler than the rumours say.

The regime, stripped to its bones. A plug-in system up to 800 W needs no inspection and no installer — registration with Fluvius within 30 days is the only obligation. That registration is not bureaucracy for its own sake: it puts your meter into the right regime, and it is the difference between a legal plug-in set and a quiet violation that surfaces when you sell the house.

The economics are modest and honest. An 800 W set on a south-facing balcony yields 700–850 kWh a year in our climate — worth €230–€290 against current retail prices, paying back a €500–€700 kit in about two and a half years. West-facing loses 20%; north-facing is a decorative purchase. The product’s genius is not the return, it is the removal of friction: no scaffolding, no quote circus, no crew on your roof.

What the marketing skips. The 800 W cap is per connection point, and the legal set must be registered — the “just plug in two” advice circulating online is the violation. Renter? The landlord’s written consent is required, and apartment co-ownership rules add a layer. And the generation directly offsets your consumption only if something is running: a balcony set with nobody home all day exports most of its yield at feed-in rates, which halves the return.

The battery variant is where this category gets interesting: plug-in storage from the Chinese value tier has collapsed to €400–€500 per kWh at retail, and the same light registration regime applies. A balcony set plus a small plug-in battery is now a legitimate entry point for renters and apartment dwellers — the demographic rooftop solar never reached.
