Besscare United Kingdom

The market

The UK’s home storage market is shifting from feed-in-tariff legacy to time-of-use optimization. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays pennies, but Octopus Agile and Intelligent Octopus Flux turn batteries into daily arbitrage machines. Heat pump uptake under BUS grants is boosting storage demand for load-shifting.

The buyer's guide

Buying in the UK: the 0% VAT on batteries (with solar) applies through March 2027. MCS certification is mandatory for SEG eligibility. Compare the standard SEG rates versus time-of-use export tariffs — the difference can be 5x. The Home Energy Scotland grant offers up to £7,500 for storage in rural areas.

The rulebook

Key rules: Ofgem is reviewing the Future System Operator’s DER participation framework. The MCS battery standard (MIS 3012) sets installation requirements. The BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme) covers heat pumps at £7,500 but does not directly fund storage. The DSIT solar taskforce targets 70 GW by 2035.
