Sodium-Ion Batteries Hit Commercial Scale — CATL, BIWATT, Jackery and Sharp Lead the Charge

Sodium-ion batteries have spent years waiting in the wings as lithium’s cheaper, safer alternative. In 2026 they finally stepped onto the main stage.

Sodium-ion battery technology has moved decisively from laboratory promise to commercial deployment in 2026, with four companies — CATL, BIWATT, Jackery, and Sharp — driving adoption across grid-scale, commercial, and residential markets.

CATL officially unveiled the TENER Sodium Energy Storage System in Munich on June 22, 2026, describing it as the world’s first field-validated sodium-ion battery energy storage solution. The system delivers over 30 MWh of rated capacity on a fully modular architecture, with each module weighing approximately 42 tonnes and only 34 units required for a 1 GWh site. CATL states the system can reach 15,000 cycles at 25°C with 70% state of health, equivalent to a 25- to 30-year service life. It retains over 92% of its capacity at -20°C and can suppress fire and explosion under extreme conditions. Cumulative shipments are expected to reach 1 GWh by the end of 2026, with first deliveries in China from September 2026 and global shipments from June 2027.

BIWATT expanded its sodium-ion portfolio at Intersolar Europe 2026 with the PowerNest R5 residential battery and PowerLake I3 commercial and industrial battery, both built on UL-certified NFPP technology. Unlike conventional integrators, BIWATT participates in cell-level development, defining performance, safety, and reliability requirements from the earliest stages of product design. The PowerNest R5 delivers modular scalability and active balancing for residential applications, while the PowerLake I3 extends the platform into commercial and industrial markets for solar-plus-storage, backup power, and distributed energy projects. BIWATT sodium-ion products are now deployed across more than 20 countries, primarily in Europe.

At IFA 2026 in Berlin, Jackery showcased the EnergyGuard Max, a whole-home energy storage system pairing the Energycore 100 kWh battery module with the PowerVault 50 inverter in weather-resistant enclosures. The battery has a nominal capacity of 104 kWh and an operating voltage of 332.8 V. The LFP battery is liquid cooled, supporting OTA updates and operating down to -20°C. Jackery CEO Jack Sun emphasized identifying pain points in the transition to sustainable energy, ranging from resilience and affordability to usability and aesthetics.

Sharp’s entry targets urban homes. Its new JH-WB2621 “Eee Storage” model, released September 8, 2026, offers 11.5 kWh capacity — a 21% increase over previous models — in a footprint 35% smaller, weighing just 95 kg. The system integrates Sharp’s AI-driven Cocoro Energy platform, raising the solar self-consumption rate to approximately 75%. During grid outages, discharge output increases from 3.0 kVA to 4.2 kVA, allowing households to run multiple heavy-load appliances simultaneously.

The broader market context is compelling. CATL expects sodium-ion production costs to reach parity with LFP by the end of 2026, driven by industrial-grade sodium carbonate priced at just $200–$280 per tonne versus $20,000–$25,000 for lithium carbonate. With GWh-scale deliveries from CATL, UL-certified products from BIWATT reaching 20+ countries, and residential launches from Jackery and Sharp, sodium-ion has arrived as a complementary chemistry unlocking applications lithium cannot economically serve.
